Why Nature-based Solutions
Why Nature-based Solutions
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can offer powerful, cost-effective ways to address the climate and nature crises, supporting the health and resilience of people and the planet. By protecting, restoring, and regeneratively managing ecosystems and working lands, NbS can help us both mitigate and adapt to the threats of climate change by increasing carbon sequestration, biodiverse species habitat, resilient food and water supplies, disaster risk protection, and economic livelihood opportunities.
NbS could
Reduce emissions by at least 5 (or up to 11.7) GtCO2e annually by 2030, and at least 10 (or up to 18) GtCO2e by 2050, a significant contribution to tackling climate change
Reduce the intensity of climate and weather-related hazards by 26%, providing developing countries with at least US$104 billion in 2030 and US$ 393 billion in 2050 in cost savings
Generate up to $7-30 of estimated benefits for every $1 dollar invested

Financing is needed for NbS
To fully realize the impact potential of NbS, we need to significantly scale-up financing flows. According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the current funding of $200 billion per year needs to double to $384 billion by 2025 and triple to $542 billion by 2030. Private sector investment, currently at $35 billion per year (18% of total NbS investment), must also grow significantly as should investments in Africa, Asia and Latin America, which currently only receive 18% of current NbS investment. With increased investment, NbS can play a pivotal role in creating a sustainable future.
We are a nonprofit helping bridge the gap – advising partner projects on investment readiness, identifying barriers and proposing solutions to viable financing pathways for high-quality NbS.
